Nostalgia is denial – denial of the painful present… the name for this denial is golden age thinking – the erroneous notion that a different time period is better than the one one’s living in – it’s a flaw in the romantic imagination of those people who find it difficult to cope with the present.– Midnight in Paris
While golden age thinking might be considered an “erroneous notion” to some, there’s a certain amount of comfort that comes with times that felt simpler, easier, and more carefree.
And let’s be honest…the present (for about a year now) hasn’t exactly been the easiest thing to cope with.
While I used to be guilty of thinking past decades were simpler and better, I realized that living through modern history gives us the unique privilege of drawing inspiration from the past.
Escapism Through Fashion
Escapism in fashion is something that I frequently turn to as a way to make me feel better about my current situation. Even when I was little, I was known to change my outfit 3-4 times per day to encompass all of the versions of myself I wanted to embrace. Lately, we are seeing so many bright colors and styles indicative of decades past. It feels like a response to the slow-changing international situation, and we’re all looking for little bright spots – even if that’s just your favorite top in yellow.
If you allow it, what you wear can transform how you feel about yourself and your circumstances, if only for a little while. While these small changes may not be everlasting, improving your mood and your outlook even just a little bit will change how you approach your day in a positive way.
’70s Inspired Pieces
When I first set eyes on this floral crop top I immediately was in love. From the composition to the print and the smocking I always feel so inspired and confident when I wear it. The 1970s is one of my favorite decades in fashion, and there are a lot of trends coming back though reminiscent of this period. Colors like bright yellow and sage green, floral prints, and crop tops all feel very vintage with a fun, modern spin.
