You know that feeling when you pick up a new item for your wardrobe and it looks good with just about anything?

Well, that’s pretty much where I’m at with this mock turtleneck top. I have to say…the cost per wear is under a penny at this point!

After spending so much time poring over the necessities you need for a functional, multi-purpose wardrobe, there’s always this feeling of serendipity when you find a new item that just fits right in.

For me, this mock turtleneck top checks all my boxes and more.

The Trademarks of this Wardrobe Basic

Having a decent collection of basics in your wardrobe allows you to maximize the wearability of other items in your closet. These basics even make statement pieces more accessible. They also provide a solid framework for you to add your own unique touches so that you’re always comfortable. When framing your style this way, you can also ensure that what you’re wearing feels authentically you.

Understanding what basics makes your closet come alive can take a little patience and practice. Over time, you will find the items that truly feel like you and not a representation of what someone else thinks you should wear.

Since I’ve gotten so much use out of this simple top under $20, I wanted to share a bit more about it. Maybe you will find this (or a similar top) to be a new basic you can wear for years to come.

The Mock Turtleneck

The mock turtleneck of this light sweater makes the top less bulky at the collar. This style still evokes the feeling of a high, warmer neckline without the added fabric around your neck. The mock turtleneck feels modern while also playing into a transitional weather staple. In addition, this neckline makes it easy to showcase statement necklaces or other jewelry.

A Tighter Fit

While I’m a fan of oversized clothing, everything has a time and a place. When it comes to this basic, opting for a tighter fit will allow this top to wear well under t-shirts, dresses, and other larger items in your wardrobe. It will keep oversized items from looking too large on your frame by drawing the eye to a tighter-fitting piece of clothing.

A Cropped Cut

While cropped fits may not be for everyone, a cropped fit has its benefits. I’m not shy when it comes to showing a little midriff, but if you are this top can still work for you too. The cropped cut keeps excess fabric from building around the middle. So if you layer the top under a dress like I am here, the additional fabric won’t be obvious. Plus, the cropped fit makes the top more warm weather friendly. This top also pairs especially well with a pair of universally flattering high-waisted jeans.

Works on Its Own

My favorite thing about this cropped mock turtleneck top is that not only does it layer well, but it can stand on it’s own too. You can bring it on a beach vacation this summer to offset chilly evenings. I love wearing it to Costco where the temperature drops a noticeable 20 degrees and has me wondering whether I really need to pick up anything in the frozen section on this trip.

The Perfect Light Layer

Since we’re heading into more transitional seasons, focusing on lighter layers will give you more wardrobe options without the worry of being overdressed. If the weather looks uncertain you can easily bring this top along just in case. It’s a safe bet if you want to wear it under a summer dress, like I am here, in the event that the weather turns against your favor. This top is also the perfect staple if you’re someone that gets cold easily as it provides some much-needed warmth without making you look overdressed.
