Leaving Georgia, I was absolutely heartbroken that I had to say goodbye to my favorite smoothie. Once a week, I would pop by my favorite health food restaurant for the only smoothie that could turn my mood around. Rich, creamy, and mouth-watering, I though I would be left to endlessly attempt to recreate this masterpiece in my own kitchen.

But before the move, out of sheer luck, we ended up selling a few pieces of furniture to the girl that worked at the restaurant and always made my favorite smoothie. Realizing this, I quickly offered her a deal on the furniture in exchange for the recipe.

So over a couple of giggles at my sheer passion for this healthy green avocado smoothie, she shared the ingredients and measurements with a few notes. I was surprised at the simplicity, but at the time I wouldn’t have put those ingredients together.

Now I get to enjoy this recipe whenever I can catch my avocados ripe, and you can too!

I did tweak this recipe a bit from the original, only for calorie purposes. The original called for 3 ounces of maple syrup, and while that tastes amazing it adds up to over 300 calories. In the notes section of the recipe I’ll give you what you need to make the original smoothie, if you like.

5 Reasons to Eat More Avocado

  1. It’s a high-fat food, loaded with monounsaturated fatty acids. Aka, the good kind of fat.
  2. It can lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which helps to prevent hardening of the arteries.
  3. Contains a ton of nutrients, including vitamin K, folate, vitamin C, potassium, as well as several others.
  4. High in fiber, which helps you stay full longer. This is why avocado is a popular weight loss food despite being relatively high in calories.
  5. High in antioxidants, which help protect your body against free radicals.

Notes on the Blender & 5 Tips for Better Blending

(currently on sale!)

If you’re looking at your blender like no way can my blender make something so creamy, I have a few helpful tips for you. My Vitamix is pretty much my favorite kitchen appliance, but the price tag can make it a difficult purchase.

Instead of trying to get that fresh spinach or kale blended well in your blender, opt for frozen greens. If your blender has difficulty with greens, buying them frozen will help them blend more evenly and smoothly. This was my go-to before I got my Vitamix.

In short, spinach! Spinach can add a creamy texture to your smoothies, and it also blends better overall. Kale is fantastic in smoothies, though I’ve found it takes a little more muscle to blend it to a smooth texture. Even with my Vitamix, it takes some time to blend kale thoroughly.

Show your blender a little love by gradually increasing the speed. Not only with this help extend the life of your blender, it will also help you achieve that creamy texture.

It takes just a little time for you blender to break down all those healthy ingredients. Try your best not to rush the process. If you know your blender has trouble, stop it every 10 seconds to push the ingredients from the sides back toward the blades.

Save yourself wash time once you’re finished. Fill your blender with a little bit of dish soap and a couple of cups of water. Then turn your blender on low to medium and allow it to wash itself. Rinse out the suds, dry, and store your blender and you’re done!
