5 Books to Make You a Badass This Year

Wow, I wish I was less of a badass last year. SAID NO ONE EVER.

Sometimes we all need a little kick in the butt to get to where we want to be. What better way to do that then with the help of some successful and insightful people? These books will provide motivation, clarity, and even a few laughs.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck –  Mark Manson

Despite what the title may suggest, this book is not about throwing your cares to the wind. The language of the book is a disguise to trick you into reading a book about values. This book is about finding what is truly important to you and knowing exactly what fucks to give, and shows you how to limit your concern on things that are not adding value to your life. This book is a real self-help book in that it isn’t written with a ton of feel-good fluff you typically get from these types of books. It’s raw, unfiltered, and honest. Mark encourages you to look at your own situation and not only see it for what it is, but accept it. He forces you to look at reality and shift your focus from achieving this unattainably perfect and problem free life, Mark begs the question “What problem do you want to have?” What problems excite you? These problems will be the reality in the every day and dealing with problems that are challenging and rewarding will help you find your real happiness.

#GIRLBOSS – Sophia Amoruso

What to say about #GIRLBOSS that hasn’t already been said? I love this book because it is inspiring to absolutely anyone (not just girls!) Sophia doesn’t have an advanced education, wealthy parents, or knew exactly the right people at the right time. She is what most would consider an average woman with a distinct set of obsessive skills that helped her rise to the top of the internet.  She impresses upon you that you need to know what it is you want and go after it unflinchingly. Sophia’s aptitude for business wasn’t something that she was born with, but that she worked after obsessively.

You Are a Badass – Jen Sincero

If you’re tired of being frustrated and unmotivated, this book is for you. Jen illuminates common thought processes and behaviors that keep us from living a truly awesome life and she coaches the reader on how to identify them, replace them, and move forward like a badass.

10% Happier – Dan Harris

This book is a practical guide to meditation, free of the spiritual fluff that many of these books tend to have. After having a televised panic attack on Good Morning America, Dan begins to look at alternative ways of calming his stress and workaholic mindset. This book serves as a memoir through Dan’s journey while giving meditation inspiration along the way. It operates on the premise that meditation won’t solve all of your problems, but it can make you 10% happier.

F*ck Feelings – Michael Bennett MD, Sarah Bennett

This book is an interesting mix of science and comedy as psychiatrist Michael Bennet writes alongside his comedy writer daughter, Sarah Bennett. F*ck Feelings will help you see how to find a renewed sense of freedom by getting over yourself and heading toward goals that are realistic and attainable. It is a practical, matter-of-fact, at times sarcastic (but not too much) approach to self-improvement that will keep you reading. The goal of this book is not to teach you to ignore your feelings, but to put your expectations in the right place and take a more practical approach to achieve your goals.
